Naval Power

There's simply no way around reviewing the literature surrounding Tirpitz, his relationship with the Reichstag and the Kaiser, as well as the role of mercantilists, industry and civil society lobbyists promoting naval power for Germany.
I've begun by revisiting Dirk Boenker's excellent book, Militarism in a Global Age, which looks carefully at these things in a more or less comparative manner. pairing Germany with another upcoming empire - the United States. Not only is there acres of useful source material and good analysis. It's also got some excellent commentary on the working relationship with the Wilhelm II.
Not a bad place to start, but I'm going to have to make my way backwards now, towards Berghahn's seminal work, as well as trawling Tirpitz's (notorious) memoirs, before hitting the archives early next year.
